Tori Bowie, the American sprinter who achieved success in the Rio Olympics, tragically passed away due to childbirth complications, according to her agent.
Bowie, who won a gold medal in the 4x100m relay and earned silver in the 100m and bronze in the 200m at the 2016 Olympics, died at her residence in Florida at the age of 32 in May.
Her agent, Kimberly Holland, expressed that the speculation surrounding Bowie's death had been deeply hurtful. She hopes that now that the truth is known, there will be apologies from those who made unfounded assumptions.
According to an autopsy report obtained by USA Today Sports, Bowie's death was determined to be "natural." The report indicated that she was approximately eight months pregnant and was in labor at the time of her passing. Potential complications mentioned in the report included respiratory distress and eclampsia, a condition characterized by seizures during pregnancy.
Bowie made a successful transition from long jump to sprinting in 2014 and quickly made her mark on the track, becoming the fastest woman in the world that year. She held the distinction of being the only American woman to win an Olympic or world title in the 100m since Carmelita Jeter's victory in 2011.
