Tom Pidcock, the Olympic mountain bike champion, will leave INEOS Grenadiers at the end of the season, the team confirmed on Wednesday. Speculation about his future with the team had been ongoing for several months, and the decision for Pidcock's departure by mutual consent was finally made official.
Pidcock, 25, is expected to join Q36.5 Pro Cycling, a second-tier team, after agreeing to terminate his contract with INEOS. His departure comes after a series of disagreements with team management, which reportedly led to him being dropped from the squad for Il Lombardia in October despite being the team's highest-paid rider. His time at the team has been marked by both successes and tension.
Grenadiers' CEO John Allert expressed pride in Pidcock's achievements with the team, highlighting their collaboration over the past four years. Allert emphasized that the decision to part ways would allow both Pidcock and INEOS to focus on their future goals, with Pidcock pursuing new ambitions in multi-disciplinary cycling events. He wished Pidcock success in his future endeavours.
Pidcock joined INEOS in 2021, quickly making a mark with significant victories such as a stage win at the 2022 Tour de France, Strade Bianche, and the Amstel Gold Race. His impressive performance also extended to mountain biking, where he claimed Olympic gold in 2021 and is set to defend his title in Paris 2024. Following a challenging season for INEOS, the team underwent a management shake-up in October, which included the departure of sport director Steve Cummings.
