Tom McKean, a former 800m specialist who once claimed a medal at the European Championships alongside Sebastian Coe and Steve Cram, has returned to athletics after a 30-year hiatus.
Following his retirement from competitive running, McKean pursued a career in the police, but he has recently re-engaged with the sport in a coaching role. Now 61, McKean has been featured in a Scottish Athletics documentary titled Giving Back to Track – Tom McKean (Motherwell AC), capturing his return to the track as he mentors young athletes.
McKean's coaching journey began when he retired from the police force 18 months ago and began running with his wife at Motherwell AC. He was quickly persuaded to take on coaching responsibilities at the club, where he has been welcomed by the community.
With his storied career, which includes World Indoor and European Outdoor titles, McKean has become an inspiring figure, aiming to instill ambition and determination in the next generation of athletes.
Throughout his career, McKean enjoyed notable successes, including a silver medal at the 1986 Commonwealth Games and golds at the 1989 World Cup, 1990 European Championships, and 1993 World Indoors.
Despite his many achievements, McKean emphasizes the importance of effort over results, teaching his athletes that giving 100% is the true measure of success. His own experience of finishing second in the European Championships, where he gave his best but was narrowly beaten by Coe, has shaped his coaching philosophy.
Now, as a coach, McKean is dedicated to providing a supportive environment for young athletes to face both successes and setbacks, helping them grow through the challenges of competitive sport. He believes in the power of athletics to teach valuable life lessons, equipping athletes with the tools to navigate both triumphs and disappointments in their personal and sporting lives.
