After the first two events of the heptathlon at the European Athletics Championships in Rome, Great Britain's Katarina Johnson-Thompson is trailing leader Nafissatou Thiam by 143 points. Johnson-Thompson, the world champion, clocked 13.66 seconds in the 100m hurdles, finishing seventh in her heat, before achieving a high jump of 1.83m, jointly securing the second-best mark alongside compatriot Jade O’Dowda.
Meanwhile, Olympic champion Thiam leads the heptathlon standings with 2,186 points after posting a time of 13.74s in the 100m hurdles and clearing an impressive 1.95m in the high jump. Thiam's performance places her ahead of fellow Belgian Noor Vidts (2,078 points), Italy's Sveva Gerevini (2,050 points), and Johnson-Thompson (2,043 points), who is tied with Croatia's Jana Koscak.
Jade O’Dowda, 24, sits in sixth place overall with 2,037 points after running 13.70s in the 100m hurdles and achieving a high jump of 1.83m. The shot put and 200m events are scheduled for the evening session on Friday, with the long jump, javelin, and 800m to follow on Saturday.
In other events, Britain's Jemma Reekie secured her spot in the women's 1500m final by winning her heat in 4 minutes 6.68 seconds. Reekie will be joined by compatriots Georgia Bell (4:12.01) and Katie Snowden (4:12.17), who finished second and third in their respective heats, in Sunday's final.
