Sixteen-year-old Australian sprinting sensation Gout Gout stunned the athletics world on Saturday by recording the fastest 200m time ever by someone his age. Competing at the Australian All Schools Athletics Championships in Brisbane, Gout clocked an astonishing 20.04 seconds, surpassing Peter Norman's longstanding national record of 20.06 set during the 1968 Olympics.
This remarkable achievement has drawn comparisons to Usain Bolt, as Gout accomplished something even the legendary sprinter did not manage at the same age.
According to World Athletics, Gout's time is the quickest ever recorded by a 16-year-old over 200m and ranks as the second-fastest in history for athletes under 18, eclipsing Bolt's 20.13 seconds. Reflecting on his feat, Gout expressed amazement at his rapid progress.
"These are adult times, and here I am, just a kid, running them," he remarked. Born in Brisbane to parents who emigrated from South Sudan, Gout credited his hard work and determination for his unexpected success this year.
The weekend also highlighted Gout's prowess in the 100m, where he posted a wind-assisted time of 10.04 seconds, further demonstrating his immense talent. Speaking about his achievements, Gout exuded confidence, saying, "Pressure makes diamonds, and I guess I'm better than a diamond right now." Despite his rapid rise, he remains grounded and optimistic about his future in athletics, with dreams of achieving even greater milestones in the years ahead.
Next month, Gout will head to the United States to train under Olympic 100m champion Noah Lyles, as reported by ABC. The young sprinter, who will turn 17 at the end of this month, is part of a family of seven siblings and has already secured an endorsement deal with Adidas. With his record-breaking performances and growing international opportunities, Gout's journey to becoming a global sprinting star seems well underway.
