Teammate Rowe believes Tom Pidcock struggles between overall finish and stage wins

Posted : 14 July 2023
Luke Rowe, a teammate of Tom Pidcock in Ineos Grenadiers, believes Pidcock is torn between aiming for a high overall finish at the Tour de France and chasing stage wins. Rowe expressed his confidence in Pidcock's ability to contend for a podium spot. Pidcock himself had ruled out winning the yellow jersey, acknowledging the dominance of Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar this year.

Despite this, Pidcock has performed well in the mountains and currently sits in eighth place in the general classification, albeit over five minutes behind Vingegaard. With Vingegaard and Pogacar establishing a significant lead, the battle for the final podium position is shaping up. Jai Hindley is currently in third place, with Pidcock's teammate Carlos Rodriguez in fourth.

Pidcock's strong performance on the Puy de Dome climb during Stage 9 has put him in contention for a podium finish. Rowe discussed Pidcock's dilemma and predicted that the upcoming mountain stages, starting with the Grand Colombier, will reveal whether Pidcock will continue to fight for a high overall finish or shift focus to stage wins.

Rowe expressed confidence in Pidcock's abilities, noting his improvement throughout the race. He believes that either Pidcock or Rodriguez has the potential to secure a podium spot, outperforming competitors like Hindley and Yates.

Rowe emphasized the team's support for their general classification contenders and anticipated a continued fight for a podium position behind the dominant Vingegaard and Pogacar.
