The Technical Director of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Samuel Onikeku, is optimistic that Nigerian athletes will excel and secure slots at the CAA Region II Athletics Championships, which begins in Ghana today (Tuesday).
Onikeku said every opportunity is available for Nigeria's male and female athletes to secure more slots to compete at the Paris Olympic Games.
"I am very optimistic that our athletes, especially the women's 4×400m relay team and some of our male athletes, will secure Olympic slots in this event," Onikeku said.
Onikeku, who is also the AFN leader of the delegation, said that with Ghana and Cote D'Ivoire bringing their elite athletes based in the United States to seek qualifications at the Region II Athletics Championships, the competition is very tense and tough. "Overall, I expect our athletes to seize the opportunity to qualify," he added.
The TD also stated that if they fail to secure the Paris Games tickets in Accra, Ghana, there are other competitions such as the Nigeria Trials coming up in Benin City, Edo State, between June 16-18, and the CAA Senior Athletics Championships in Douala, Cameroon, from June 21-26.
According to him, these competitions are lined up for Nigeria's athletes to participate in and qualify.
Meanwhile, the CAA Region II President, Chief Tonobok Okowa, arrived in Ghana on Monday, brimming with confidence for athletes from Nigeria and the entire region to achieve qualification victory.
22 athletes are representing Team Nigeria Athletics at the championships, which are taking place at the Sports Complex of the University of Ghana, Legon.
