Team Nigeria's hopes for a podium finish at the Paris 2024 Olympics took a hit as major medal hopeful Tobiloba Amusan was eliminated from the women’s 100m hurdles after failing to reach the final. Despite being the world record holder, Amusan did not achieve the required timing, finishing with a time of 12.55 seconds and falling short of automatic qualification among the fastest losers. She was edged out by Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent and France’s Cyrena Samba-Mayela, who recorded better times.
The disappointment for Team Nigeria's athletics team was significant on Day 9 of the athletics competition in Paris. Amusan’s failure to advance was a major setback, considering her status as the world record holder in the event. The defending champion, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico, excelled in the 100m hurdles semi-final, while the United States’ Alaysha Johnson set the fastest time of the morning, alongside strong performances from Masai Russell and Grace Stark.
Johnson and Stark, along with other U.S. competitors, dominated their heats, with three athletes qualifying for the final. Devynne Charlton from the Bahamas also showed strong form, finishing second in her heat. Nadine Visser of the Netherlands secured her place in the final, continuing her impressive Olympic journey. Samba-Mayela, who had previously withdrawn from Tokyo due to injury, delivered a strong performance in front of a supportive home crowd.
In the men’s 4×400m relay, Nigeria’s team was disqualified due to a lane violation in the semifinal, as reported by the referee under rule TR17.2.3. This disqualification means that Nigeria will not compete in the final of the men’s 4×400m relay.
