Tamirat Tola Aims to Make History at New York City Marathon After Olympic Gold

Posted : 21 August 2024

Ethiopian marathoner Tamirat Tola is set to defend his title at the New York City Marathon, just weeks after securing gold in Paris. Tola aims to become only the second athlete in history to win both the Olympic title and the five-borough major in the same year. His performance last year in New York was remarkable, setting a new course record, and this year, he draws inspiration from Kenya's Peres Jepchirchir, who achieved a similar feat by winning in both the Tokyo Olympics and New York City Marathon three years ago.

Tola shared that he had a conversation with Jepchirchir during the London Marathon, where she encouraged him by saying that just as she had won the Olympics and New York, she believed he could do the same. Tola's Olympic triumph in Paris, where he set a new record on the demanding course, was particularly impressive given that he was initially not included in the team. Now, with the challenging and hilly New York course ahead, Tola feels confident and well-prepared, believing it suits his strengths perfectly.

Despite the close proximity of the New York Marathon to the Paris Olympics, Tola expressed that his recovery has been going well, and he has already resumed training. He emphasized his trust in his coach's training plan and his affection for the New York course, which he has successfully navigated before. Alongside Tola, the women's race will also see strong competition, with Kenyan bronze medalist Hellen Obiri defending her title.

The New York City Marathon promises to be an exciting event, with several top contenders announced by the organizers, New York Road Runners. The men's race will feature a formidable Kenyan lineup, including 2022 winner Evans Chebet, 2021 champion Albert Korir, and two-time winner Geoffrey Kamworor. On the women's side, Sharon Lokedi, last year's winner, will return to defend her title. Among the American hopefuls are Dakotah Lindwurm, who finished 12th in Paris, and Clayton Young, who secured a ninth-place finish in the men's race.
