Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, a two-time Olympic 400m hurdles champion and world record-holder, made a dominant return to her signature event on Friday, securing a comfortable victory at the opening leg of the new Grand Slam Track athletics circuit in Jamaica.
Competing in the 400m hurdles for the first time since her gold medal win at the Paris Olympics, McLaughlin-Levrone completed the race in 52.76 seconds, finishing well ahead of 2016 Olympic champion Dalilah Muhammad, who came in second at 54.59 seconds.
The win marked a strong start to the circuit, which offers a $100,000 prize for the best combined results in both the 400m and 400m hurdles.
McLaughlin-Levrone expressed relief after her first race of the season, acknowledging that while the race was challenging, she was happy to be back on the track. Her performance places her in a strong position to claim the hefty prize money, with the circuit’s four-event series designed to rekindle interest in track racing.
Although the event was billed as the start of a new era for the sport, it took place in front of a mostly empty stadium, leaving the spotlight on the performances of the athletes.
In other events, Olympic 200m champion Gabby Thomas also had a commanding victory, winning in 22.62 seconds, ahead of Marileidy Paulino, who clocked 22.96 seconds. Thomas noted that the significant prize money on offer had increased the competitiveness of early-season events, noting that the stakes were unusually high for this time of year.
Meanwhile, in the men’s 100m, Kenny Bednarek edged out Jamaica's Oblique Seville in a thrilling race, with Bednarek finishing in 10.07 seconds.
The meet featured several other exciting results, including victories from Chris Bailey in the men’s 400m and Brazil’s Alison Dos Santos in the men’s 400m hurdles.
In the women’s 3000m, Ethiopia’s Ejgayehu Taye produced a powerful late surge to win, while Nikki Hiltz claimed the women’s 800m with a world-leading time of 1:58.23. American runners dominated the men’s 5000m, securing a 1-2-3 finish, with Grant Fisher taking the top spot.
