Su Bingtian Signals End of 100m Career

Posted : 15 April 2025

China’s sprinting trailblazer Su Bingtian has hinted that his time competing in the 100 metres may be over after a disappointing showing at a recent domestic meet in Guangdong.

The 35-year-old, who made history as the first Asian athlete to officially break the 10-second barrier and holds the Asian record of 9.83 seconds set at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, clocked 10.49 seconds in the heats—a result he felt signaled the end of his competitive prime.

Su, once aiming to retire after China’s National Games in November, admitted he no longer sees himself as competitive enough to continue.

Reflecting on his journey, Su acknowledged the significance of his contributions to Chinese athletics and his desire to leave the sport without regrets. He noted that if he could no longer provide an advantage to his team, it would be time to step aside, saying, “I’d said I would run until I couldn’t run any more, and I did it.

Now I really can’t run any more.” Despite this, he expressed pride in what he has achieved, including China’s eventual Olympic bronze medal in the Tokyo 4x100m relay after Britain's disqualification.

While Su may be stepping back from the track, he hasn’t ruled out one final run in the relay for Guangdong at the National Games. Beyond competition, he affirmed his commitment to the sport, stating his intention to stay involved and share his knowledge and experience with younger athletes.

“I will, for sure, stay around the sport to give back what I've learned from decades of training and racing at the highest level to Chinese athletics,” he said.
