Southwest Elimination Games: Oyo, Lagos, cricket teams qualify for Gateway Games

Team Lagos and Team Oyo cricket teams qualified on Wednesday in Ibadan for the upcoming 2024 National Sports Festival (NSF), scheduled to take place in Ogun in May.  


Both teams secured qualification after emerging as the only participants in the cricket event at the South-West Zonal Elimination Competition for the NSF.  


Teams from the six states in the South-West geo-political zone—Ogun, Ekiti, Osun, Lagos, Ondo, and Oyo—were expected to participate in the zonal qualifiers, which began on Monday.  


In the men's category of the event in Ibadan, Lagos won the toss and chose to field first.  


With Oyo State batting in the first innings, Lagos scored 197 runs all out in 20 overs.  


In the second innings, Lagos chased and recorded 86 runs all out in 15.4 overs, leading to Oyo State winning by 11 overs to claim first place.  


In the women's event, Oyo State won the toss and opted to field first, sending Lagos to bat. Lagos scored 132 runs all out in 19.3 overs.  


In the second innings, Oyo State batted and scored 53 runs all out in 11.5 overs, but Lagos won by 71 runs to secure first place.  


Speaking later, John Idakwo, the coach of Oyo State's male and female cricket teams, attributed their qualification to hard work and dedication.  


Idakwo said his players gave their utmost best to qualify.  


“We came first in the male category and second in the female. We did well, and I’m very proud of my players.  


“They played according to instructions and gave it their best,” he said.  


However, the coach added that the real work had just begun for him and his teams, as there was still much to improve.  


“We have to correct all lapses and ensure we present a more formidable team at the festival.  


“We will now put more effort into training to win the gold medals, which is our target,” he said.  


The zonal competition will end on Friday, while the festival, tagged “2024 Gateway Games,” will take place from May 16 to May 30.
