Sophie O'Sullivan and Larissa Iapichino win gold medals at European U23 Championships, setting personal bests

Posted : 17 July 2023
The European Athletics U23 Championships concluded with several impressive performances from young athletes, including those with famous sporting parents. Sophie O’Sullivan and Larissa Iapichino, daughters of former world champions Sonia O’Sullivan and Fiona May, secured gold medals in their events.

Iapichino shone in the women's long jump, achieving a first-round jump of 6.93m, equaling the European lead and setting a personal best. She confidently held on to her lead despite challenging weather conditions. Sweden’s Maja Åskag took silver, and Tessy Ebosele from Ireland earned bronze in the same event.

Sophie O’Sullivan surprised everyone in the women's 1500m final, overtaking top-ranked Sarah Healy in the last 100 meters to secure gold for Ireland. This victory was a historic moment as it marked Ireland's first-ever European U23 gold medal.

O’Sullivan, the daughter of Irish icon Sonia O’Sullivan, expressed her joy and revealed that her mother had given her simple advice before the race to enjoy the experience. Britain’s Shannon Flockart claimed the bronze medal in the event.

In the decathlon, Markus Rooth from Norway emerged as the champion, surpassing his teammate Sander Skotheim. Rooth's performance set a national and championship record with 8608 points, eclipsing the record previously held by European champion Niklas Kaul from Germany.

Skotheim held the overnight lead but couldn't match Rooth's consistency on the second day. Despite a strong effort in the pole vault, Skotheim settled for silver with 8561 points. The Netherlands’ Sven Roosen took the bronze with 8128 points.
