Some Nigerian sports journalists are horrible - Tobi Amusan

Posted : 22 August 2023
Tobi Amusan, the World Athletics Record holder in 100m hurdles, has criticized some Nigerian sports journalists for their unprofessionalism, expressing her frustration with their behavior.

Amusan also revealed that she has moved past the ordeal of her suspension by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) due to a Whereabouts Failures charge.

Amusan commenced her training for the title defense at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest, Hungary.

During her training, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Hungary, Dr. Modupe Enitan Erele, visited the athletes in camp to provide support and encouragement.

Chief Tonobok Okowa, the President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), also visited the camp to uplift the athletes ahead of upcoming events.

Although Amusan appreciated the AFN and those who supported her during the challenging period, she expressed disappointment with certain Nigerian sports journalists who seemed to revel in athletes' struggles.

She mentioned, "Sorry to say this, some Nigerian sports journalists are horrible. I won’t say more than that for now."

Amusan was eventually cleared by a panel set up by World Athletics to review the AIU suspension.

Okowa urged her to focus on the 100m hurdles event, encouraging her to overcome any negative comments made during her suspension.

In the upcoming race, Amusan will compete in the fifth and final heat of the first round, seeking to be one of the four automatic qualifiers for the semifinals. She aims to defend her title and achieve success at national, continental, and world levels.
