Somalia sports minister apologizes for Nasra Abukar-Ali's controversial 100-meter sprint performance

Posted : 04 August 2023
An unforgettable and regrettable incident marred Somalia's representation at China's Universiade, leading to an apology from the country's sports minister. During the 100-meter sprint, Nasra Abukar-Ali, the Somali representative, delivered a performance that quickly went viral for all the wrong reasons, resulting in embarrassment for the country's Olympic Committee.

Abukar-Ali's run was exceptionally slow, and she took over 20 seconds to reach the finish line, recording an undignified time of 21.81 seconds. In stark contrast, the winner had already crossed the finish line a whole 10 seconds before her. Her performance was so far from the other runners that she wasn't even visible in the camera frame capturing the race.

Somali Sports Minister, Mohammed Bar Mohammed, expressed his bewilderment at how she was selected to participate in the event. It was revealed that the chairman of Somalia's Olympic Committee, Khadija Eden Dhir, had arranged for Abukar-Ali's participation, and further claims suggested that she might be a family member. As a consequence, Dhir faced suspension for her involvement in the matter.

The video of the race spread rapidly across social media, leading to widespread embarrassment for Somalia. Authorities swiftly took action to address the issue, including the suspension of the IOC chairman and the promise of further measures to be taken.

The Universiade is organized by FISU, the International Federation of University Sports, and involves athletes from universities worldwide. Curiously, the Association of Somali Universities denied sending any athletes to the competition, raising questions about how Abukar-Ali ended up participating in the race.

Overall, the incident raised serious concerns about the selection process and highlighted the need for greater accountability in Somalia's sporting institutions. The country's sports minister's apology and the measures taken against the IOC chairman serve as an attempt to address the unfortunate situation and restore credibility to Somalia's athletic representation on the international stage.
