Solomon Islands has unexpectedly nominated a marathon runner to compete in the women's 100-metre Olympic heats on Friday, surprising the nation's sprint champion. Sharon Firisua, a distance runner and two-time Olympian, has never competed in the 100 metres at a top level but will now race alongside the world's best at the Stade de France. This decision came despite the Solomon Islands Athletics Federation recommending two sprinters for the coveted wildcard spots at the games.
The selection of 30-year-old Firisua, a national 1,500-metre champion who finished 72nd in the marathon at the Tokyo Olympics, was a shock to many, including Michael Kuali, president of the Solomon Islands Athletics Federation, who expressed his surprise to Australian broadcaster ABC. Firisua had not qualified for her preferred event this time around, leading to her unexpected nomination for the sprint event.
This move has angered 22-year-old Jovita Arunia, the Solomon Islands' 100m and 200m champion, who had aspired to race in Paris. Arunia, dismayed by the committee's decision, expressed her disbelief and threatened to quit athletics over the matter, stating, "I will not compete anymore because of what they did." The country's Olympic committee did not respond to requests for comment.
