Simone Consonni's participation in the UCI Cycling World Championships has been curtailed due to an accident involving an amateur cyclist on an e-bike. The 28-year-old Italian cyclist sustained injuries, including a broken right collarbone and a broken left scaphoid, as a result of a collision during a training ride along the River Clyde cycle path near Glasgow's Exhibition Centre.
Consonni, initially set to compete in the points race at the Sir Chris Hoy velodrome on Wednesday, will now be returning to Italy for recovery and treatment. During the incident, he was riding alongside teammate Francesco Lamon, who emerged unharmed from the collision.
Recalling the accident, Consonni explained that he and Lamon were riding on a narrow cycle path with a blind left half-turn when they encountered another cyclist on an e-bike coming from the opposite direction with luggage. Despite his attempt to maneuver away from the collision, the other cyclist's helmet struck Consonni's right shoulder.
Reflecting on the accident, Consonni stated, "I did some x-rays, my collarbone is slightly chipped, the left scaphoid is broken." His injuries have unfortunately compelled him to withdraw from the remaining events of the championship.
