Simone Biles Secures Spot for Third Olympics, Eyes Redemption in Paris

Posted : 01 July 2024

Simone Biles, a four-time Olympic champion, expressed her determination and confidence in her return to the Olympics by stating, "I knew I would be back" after qualifying for the Paris Games. At 27 years old, Biles secured her place at the US Olympic trials in Minneapolis with an impressive two-day all-round score of 117.225.

The Paris Olympics will mark Biles' third appearance at the Games, following her participation in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. Despite facing a challenging experience in Tokyo, where she won a silver and a bronze medal while dealing with the 'twisties'—a mental block that affected her performance—Biles withdrew from several events to focus on her mental health and safety.

After her Tokyo performance, Biles took a hiatus from gymnastics but made a remarkable comeback in 2023. She clinched her sixth all-around world title, secured three additional world gold medals, and won two national championships, reaffirming her dominance in the sport.

Biles will lead the US women's gymnastics team in Paris, joined by Jordan Chiles, Sunisa Lee, Jade Carey, and Hezly Rivera. Joscelyn Roberson and Leanne Wong have also been named as traveling alternates. The women's gymnastics events are scheduled to take place from July 28 to August 10.
