Simone Biles makes history with 34th World Championship Medal and Gold victory in Antwerp

Posted : 06 October 2023

Simone Biles, the legendary gymnast, made history at the World Championships in Antwerp by winning the gold medal in the all-around competition with a remarkable score of 58.396 points. This victory marked her 34th World Championship medal, surpassing the previous record and establishing her as the most decorated gymnast in history, both in terms of total medals and gold medals.

Biles' incredible comeback continued as she clinched her 21st gold medal at the World Championships, further solidifying her status as a gymnastics icon. This achievement is particularly remarkable as she returned to competition after a two-year break following the Tokyo Olympics.

During the competition, Biles showcased her exceptional skills in various disciplines. She started on the vault, receiving a score of 15.1 points. Her performance on the parallel bars, considered her weakest exercise, earned her a score of 14.33. In the balance beam exercise, she impressed the judges with a score of 14.433, securing her position as the frontrunner before the final exercise.

Despite a brief stumble during her powerful floor exercise, Biles displayed remarkable resilience and earned a score of 14.533 in that discipline. Her overall score of 58.396 secured her the gold medal. Notably, she used Noa Kirl's song "Unicorn" for her performance.

In second place was last year's world champion, Brazilian Rebecca Andrade, who excelled in the floor exercise. American Shaylis Jones, who had a poor landing during her exercise, finished third and won the bronze medal.

Simone Biles' legacy extends beyond her exceptional gymnastic achievements. She made history by performing the Yurchenko double-pike element during the qualifying round, a move now named "Biles 2" in her honor. Biles is not only known for her athletic prowess but also for her advocacy for mental health in sports, support for at-risk youth, and her stance against sexual assault.

Biles' journey includes her memorable decision to withdraw from team competition during the Tokyo Olympics due to mental health challenges, a move that sparked important conversations about athlete well-being. Despite these challenges, she participated in the beam final and earned a podium finish.
