Shericka Jackson wins Jamaican national 100m title, becoming fifth fastest woman

Posted : 08 July 2023
Shericka Jackson etched her name in history as she sprinted to victory in the women's 100m at Jamaica's national championships, clocking an impressive time of 10.65 seconds. This not only secured her the national title but also made her the fifth fastest woman of all time, tying with American Marion Jones on the all-time list.

Jackson's time was the fastest recorded in the world this year, surpassing the previous mark set by Sha'Carri Richardson at the US championships the day before, which stood at 10.71 seconds. Despite her remarkable performance, Jackson believes there is still room for improvement.

"I think the ending needs a little fixing," remarked the 28-year-old Jamaican sprinter. "I know I'm a strong finisher, but I still need to work on that a bit. I have to go back to the drawing board with my coach, but overall, I did a very good job."

The women's world record in the 100m event stands at 10.49 seconds, set by Florence Griffith-Joyner in 1988. Jackson's outstanding victory secures her a spot in the upcoming World Championships in Budapest in August, alongside second-placed Shashalee Forbes and third-placed Natasha Morrison. Additionally, defending world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce also qualifies for the championships.

Notably, two-time Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah, who has faced injury setbacks this season, finished fifth and will not be competing in the World Championships.

In the men's event, Rohan Watson, Shericka Jackson's training partner, emerged as the victor with a time of 9.91 seconds. The 21-year-old Jamaican athlete achieved his first-ever win in a final, posting the joint-ninth fastest time of the year and the tenth best in Jamaican history.
