Sha'Carri Richardson Triumphs Again at Zurich as Beatrice Chebet Shines in 5000m

Posted : 06 September 2024

Sha'Carri Richardson continues her dominance as the reigning world champion by winning the 100m at Zurich’s Letzigrund Stadium, clocking in at 10.84 seconds. In a closely contested race, she overcame Olympic champion Julien Alfred, who finished with a time of 10.89 seconds, while European champion Dina Asher-Smith also posted 10.89 seconds but fell just short of a podium finish. Mujinga Kambundji, two-time Olympic finalist, finished eighth in 11.14 seconds, praising the Swiss crowd for their energy despite the challenging weather conditions.

Beatrice Chebet, the double Olympic champion from Kenya, aimed for the 5,000m world record at Weltklasse Zürich but fell just short, finishing in 14:09.52 minutes. Despite missing the record, she still shattered the meeting record and set the best time of the year, propelled by the crowd’s support. Her remarkable run places her among the top four fastest women in history over this distance.

In the 100m hurdles, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn reversed her recent defeat in Paris by taking victory ahead of European champion Cyréna Samba Mayela and Olympic champion Masai Russell. The competition’s fierce level left world champion Danielle Williams and former world record holder Kendra Harrison finishing outside the podium, while local favourite Ditaji Kambundji was disqualified for a false start but remained upbeat, savoring the stadium's atmosphere.

Yaroslava Mahuchikh continued her unbeaten streak in the high jump, winning her eighth event of the season by clearing 1.96m despite adverse weather. Meanwhile, Swiss high jumper Salome Lang bid farewell to her international career, competing for the last time in front of a supportive home crowd. The evening ended on a high note with the Swiss sprint relay team securing a historic victory in 42.55 seconds, defeating the Dutch team and marking a first-ever win in their home stadium.
