At the World Swimming Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, Sarah Sjostrom, the Swedish swimmer, made history by securing a gold medal and breaking a world record within a span of fifteen minutes.
At the age of 29, Sjostrom won her fifth consecutive gold in the 50m butterfly final with an impressive time of 24.77 seconds.
This victory marked her seventh medal at different world championships, making her the first swimmer to achieve such a feat.
Not stopping there, Sjostrom continued her incredible performance in the 50m freestyle semifinals, setting a new world record with a stunning time of 21.61 seconds.
This record broke her previous one of 21.67 seconds, which she had held for six years, setting it on the same date and at the same stage.
The moment of triumph was even more special as it coincided with her coach's birthday, and Sjostrom expressed her delight at gifting her coach this record-breaking achievement.
In another pool, Lithuania's Ruta Mailutytė equaled the world record in the 50-meter breaststroke with a time of 29.30 seconds during the semifinals.
This exceptional performance earned her the well-deserved $30,000 prize awarded to record-breaking swimmers at the championship. She will compete in the final, hoping to secure another medal after winning gold in the 100m breaststroke.
In the 800m freestyle, American swimmer Katie Ledecky continued her dominance, clinching her sixth consecutive gold with a time of 08:08.87.
This victory marked her 16th gold medal at world championships, surpassing the legendary Michael Phelps in terms of championship golds. Chinese swimmer Bingji Li won silver and set an Asian record with 8:13.31, while Australian Arain Titmuss finished third.
Kylie McEwen added to her success at the championships, securing a third gold in the 200m backstroke with a time of 02:02.85. This came after her previous wins in the 100m and 50m backstroke events.
The Australian team triumphed in the mixed 4x100 freestyle relay, breaking the ninth world record at the championship.
Jack Cartwright, Kyle Chalmers, Shayna Jack, and Molly O'Callaghan formed the winning team, setting a record time of 3:19.38, improving the Australian record set in the previous year's World Championships by 55-hundredths.
