Rhasidat Adeleke, the Irish athlete, made a remarkable climb to 20th place in the all-time women's 400m list after securing victory at the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Championships in the United States.
In an impressive display in Texas, the 20-year-old surpassed her own Irish record by an impressive 0.34 seconds, crossing the finish line in 49.20 seconds. Despite being considered the favorite, American star Britton Wilson had to settle for second place with a time of 49.64.
Adeleke's triumph not only earned her the NCAA title but also marked the first victory for an Irish athlete at the championships since 2006 when Mary Cullen won the 5,000m event. This achievement places her among the elite ranks of Irish athletics.
Although Wilson continues to hold the second position in this year's world rankings, trailing behind Marileidy Paulino from the Dominican Republic (48.98), she couldn't replicate her season's best of 49.13. Adeleke, showcasing her resilience, surged past Wilson in the final 50 meters, leaving the American unable to match the Irishwoman's impressive performance.
Unfortunately for Wilson, her aspirations of a historic double in the 400m and 400m hurdles at the championships were dashed as she finished seventh in the hurdles event with a disappointing time of 55.92. This placed her 1.47 seconds behind the winner, Savannah Sutherland.
