Ireland's Rhasidat Adeleke made a strong statement for the upcoming Paris Olympics by delivering a dominant performance in the 400m at the Diamond League event in Monaco. The 21-year-old athlete secured victory with a time of 49.17 seconds, narrowly missing her own Irish record, and finishing ahead of Dutch sprinter Lieke Klaver.
Adeleke's impressive win follows her recent success at the European Championships, where she earned a silver medal in the 400m. Her victory in Monaco also comes on the heels of her contribution to Ireland's historic gold in the mixed 4x400m relay in Rome, as well as a silver medal in the women's 4x400m relay, highlighting her exceptional form this season.
In the 2000m event, Portaferry's Ciara Mageean finished 10th, with the race won by Australia's Jess Hull, who set a new world record at 5:19.70. Great Britain's Melissa Courtney-Bryant took second place with a time of 5:26.08. Mageean, the European 1500m gold medalist, began strongly but faded as the race progressed, ultimately finishing with a time of 5:43.06. The athletics competition at the Paris Olympics is set to kick off on Friday, August 2, just one week after the Games' opening ceremony.
