South Africa's emerging 800m talent, Prudence Sekgodiso, is set to compete in the Wanda Diamond League final on Friday night in Brussels. Sekgodiso secured her place in the final by winning two Diamond League races earlier this season: first in Marrakesh, Morocco, with a world-leading time of 1:57.26, and then in Oslo, Norway, where she recorded a time of 1:58.66.
Earlier in the month, she competed in Zurich, Switzerland, where she finished sixth with a time of 1:58.90. The 22-year-old, who is an Olympic finalist, will be contending for the 2024 Diamond League title against a competitive field, including 2022 champion Mary Moraa from Kenya.
Sekgodiso has had an outstanding season with ten performances under the 2-minute mark. Her coach, Samuel Sepeng, noted that Sekgodiso is well-prepared for the final, having stayed injury-free and benefitting from her team's support. Sepeng emphasized that the Diamond League final has been a significant goal for Sekgodiso this year.
With three previous Diamond League appearances and seven national titles to her name, Sekgodiso, who won her first national title in the women’s 800m at age 17 in 2019, is facing one of the most crucial challenges of her career in Brussels. Sepeng has encouraged her to stay calm and focused, reminding her of her achievements and readiness for this final test.
