When Peter Bol he edged out the pack during the men's 800m final at the Tokyo Olympics, the Australian crowd seems cheered him.
Bol, a refugee from Sudan who arrived in Australia when he was eight years old, was the nation's first finalist in the competition in 53 years.
Bol's courageous performance in 2021 solidified his position as the new darling of Australian sport, despite the fact that he dropped to fourth in the final stretch.
He has persisted in impressing, but two months ago, he was hit with what he claims are false accusations that he is a drug cheat, shattering his chances of competing in the following Olympics and disrupting his life.
However, the handling of his case by Australia's anti-doping programme has also been criticised for "catastrophic blunders," which experts fear could have widespread repercussions.
