Team Nigeria began their campaign in the athletics events on a shaky note as two athletes, Temitope Adeshina and Tima Godbless, failed to advance past the first round of their respective events.

Temitope Adeshina, Nigeria's sole representative in the high jump, fell short of the required standard and could only manage a best effort of 1.88 meters. The student athlete from Texas Tech University finished 19th overall and did not advance to the final, as only the top 12 finishers moved on.
It has been a tough start for the Nigerian contingent, with the Long Jump joining Football, Boxing, Table Tennis, and Badminton as events in which the country has not secured any medals so far.
Meanwhile, Rosemary Chukwuma advanced to the next round in the Women's 100 meters heats, while Tima Godbless did not progress. Chukwuma posted a time of 11.26 seconds to place third in her heat, qualifying for the semi-finals. In contrast, Tima Godbless finished sixth with a time of 11.33 seconds and was eliminated from the 100 meters event.
Nigeria will also compete in the men's and women's discus, as well as the mixed relays later in the day.
