The Nigeria Wrestling Federation has confirmed that the maiden edition of the Comptroller General of Customs Military/Paramilitary Wrestling Championship will commence in Abuja from October 19 to 25.
Fourteen military and paramilitary agencies—the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Police, DSS, FRSC, NDLEA, NSCDC, Nigerian Customs, Correctional Service, Immigration Service, Fire Service, EFCC, and ICPC—will take part in the week-long event, which is set to take place at the Indoor Sports Hall of Package B of the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja.
The President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Honorable Daniel Igali, commended the Controller General of Customs, Alhaji Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for his immense support toward the development of wrestling in Nigeria.
“Today, we stand at the precipice of a new chapter, celebrating the birth of a championship that arises from the warmth, dedication, and benevolence of our esteemed Comptroller General of Customs Service, His Eminence, Alhaji Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR.
“His philanthropic spirit and commitment to uplifting others command our admiration, and I convey our gratitude on behalf of the entire board and the wrestling community of Nigeria.”
The Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports, Igali, further stated that the championship will go a long way in promoting good relationships among the military and the paramilitary agencies.
“This championship is not merely an event; it is a manifestation of the Federation's vision to propagate and enhance the art of wrestling among the Armed Forces and Paramilitary Agencies.”
“The introduction of this inaugural championship promises to significantly strengthen the dynamic synergy between military and civilian spheres through the shared values inherent in sportsmanship.”
Also speaking, the CG of Customs, Alhaji Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, represented by ACG Headquarters, Alhaji Ibrahim Umar, said his organization would do all within its power to make the championship a success.
“The importance of sports cannot be overemphasized; it assists us in developing leadership skills and equips us with the ability to set and achieve goals. We believe that athletes will be discovered during the championship.”
“Anyone who knows the CGC will know that he is a lover of sports, which is the reason he is making the move to sponsor the championship. The Nigerian Customs Service, through the CGC, is collaborating with the Nigeria Wrestling Federation to sponsor the championship as a way of corporate social responsibility—a way of giving back to society.”
Earlier, the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Brigadier General Olawale Fawole, said preparations are in top gear to ensure a hitch-free championship.
“We have agreed on the location of the championship: the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, and the approval has been given. The technical team of the wrestling federation is fully ready to provide the necessary assistance.
