Organisers of the maiden Ajegunle Youth City Marathon have announced that the race will be held on November 30, 2024.
Isaac Omoleye, the Coordinator of the National Youth Council of Nigeria for the Ajeromi/Ifelodun Local Government Area of Lagos State, explained that the 10-kilometer race, themed “Creating a Peaceful, Eco-Friendly Environment for Expanded Youth Engagement Through Sports,” is designed to showcase the vibrant culture, unity, and creativity of the area's youth. It also aims to promote fitness, good health, talent identification, and the empowerment of youth through sports.
According to him, it is important to recognize that youths are the most viable resources and assets for the growth and development of any nation. Thus, the marathon will serve as a platform to harness the potential of Ajegunle youths for meaningful engagement and active participation, contributing to a cohesive community and sustainable socioeconomic growth and peaceful development.
Isaac Moses, the Project Leader and Youth Secretary of the National Youth Council of Nigeria for the Ajeromi/Ifelodun Local Government Area, explained that the race will begin with a VIP/Corporate race on November 23, while the main race will take place on November 30. The marathon will start at Maracana Stadium and finish at the Sports Ground of the Nigeria Army Signals Barracks.
The 2.5 km corporate/VIP race will be flagged off by the Chairman of Ifelodun Local Council Development Area, Femi Okeowo, with the Chairman of Ajeromi/Ifelodun Local Government Area, Fatai Ayoola, receiving them at the Council headquarters.
Moses noted that there will also be a race for the physically challenged and mentioned that they have received approval from the Ajeromi/Ifelodun Local Government Area and the Ifelodun Local Council Development Area. The event has also been endorsed by critical stakeholders, including a House of Assembly member representing Lagos Constituency 1 & 2, a Federal House of Representatives member, and the traditional ruler of Apapa, His Royal Majesty Oba Moroof Amoda-Tijani, who will be the Royal Father of the Day, among others.
In addition, they are in contact with the Lagos State Sports Commission for technical oversight, and with the Military, Police, Federal Road Safety Commission, and other paramilitary organizations for security on race day.
Regarding registration, he stated that it is already ongoing both online and offline. He also announced that raffle tickets will be sold at affordable prices to raise funds, with prizes such as plasma televisions, refrigerators, and other fantastic items available through the raffle draw.
The Project Leader also announced that the event will conclude with a gala night, celebrating winners and individuals who have brought fame to Ajegunle in sports, music, arts, and entertainment.
The race, which will involve about N20 million in prize money, will see winners in both the male and female categories, including physically challenged participants, receiving N300,000. The first and second runners-up in all categories will receive N200,000 and N100,000, respectively, along with other consolation prizes.
