Africa's No 1 badminton player, Opeyori's Olympics dream fading away after loss to Switzerland’s Tobias

Posted : 31 July 2024

Nigeria’s hopes in badminton at the Paris 2024 Olympics took a blow as the team’s captain, Opeyori Anuoluwapo, suffered a straight-sets defeat to Switzerland’s Tobias Kunzi in the opening round.

The match, held at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena, saw Kunzi edge out Opeyori with scores of 22-20 and 21-14.

Opeyori, representing Africa with determination, started strong but struggled to maintain his form against Kunzi’s aggressive play.

The Swiss player, who had previously lost to China’s Li Shifeng, made a remarkable recovery in this match.

Kunzi had been defeated by Li with scores of 21-13 in each set, but he showcased resilience and tactical prowess to overcome Opeyori.

The loss puts Opeyori in a precarious position as he prepares for his next match against the highly ranked Li Shifeng.

To advance to the knockout stages, Opeyori must secure a decisive victory against Li, which requires him to win by a substantial margin. Li, a formidable opponent, has demonstrated exceptional skill and consistency, making this task a significant challenge.

Opeyori’s performance in this critical match will be crucial for his Olympic aspirations. A win is necessary not only to keep his hopes alive but also to redeem himself from this earlier setback.

The stakes are high, and Opeyori’s ability to rebound from this early loss will test his resilience and determination.

As the competition progresses, all eyes will be on him to see if he can turn his fortunes around and make a mark in the prestigious tournament.
