In what could be described as an unprecedented display of athletic prowess, Nasarawa State has turned their earlier intentions into reality by securing qualifications for the National Youth Games in three sports.
The state’s talented athletes have worked tirelessly to earn their place on the national stage, and their commitment at the recently concluded North Central Zonal Eliminations held in Jos, Plateau State, has paid off in spectacular fashion.
Team Nasarawa’s Boys' Hockey, coached by Zainab Sule, qualified for the 8th National Youth Games with six points from two games after overcoming stiff competition from Plateau and Niger States at the North Central Zonal Eliminations.
Additionally, the state’s Girls' Hockey Team also secured qualification for the national multi-sports event scheduled to take place in Asaba, Delta State, later in September 2024, leading in all aspects.
They will represent the zone alongside Team Benue State at the major event.
Nasarawa's Girls' Volleyball Team, coached by Sani Mohammed, also impressed at the Zonal Eliminations, earning a qualification spot.
The state coordinator said that the outcome was a heartwarming achievement and a testament to the hard work, determination, and teamwork of Nasarawa State’s young athletes, their coaches, and support staff, coupled with the substantial investment by Governor Abdullahi Sule in sports and talent development.
The State's Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Jafaru Ango, said, "Nasarawa State could not be more proud of the contingent's accomplishments at the Zonal Qualifiers. Congratulations to our great, young ambassadors and National Youth Games-bound athletes. We look forward to cheering them on at the main event in Asaba, Delta State, later next month (September)."
The 8th National Youth Games will take place from September 9th to 19th, 2024, in Asaba, Delta State, South-South Nigeria, with participants coming from all 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
