Posted : 31 August 2024

The Director of Sports at the Bayelsa State Sports Council, Braveman Wodi, says he is pleased with the performance of the state's contingent in the zonal eliminations for the 8th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State.

Team Bayelsa arrived in Benin City, Edo State, for the zonal eliminations for the National Youth Games, which are scheduled to take place from September 9th to 20th, 2024, in Asaba.

In an interview, Sir Wodi stated that Team Bayelsa qualified in all the sports they entered for the zonal eliminations, both male and female, describing the performance as impressive for the state.

He explained that the Bayelsa football team qualified in both male and female categories, the male handball team secured qualification as well, and the rugby team, which fielded only a male squad, progressed to the games. Volleyball teams, both male and female, were also successful in their qualifications.

According to him, the team is going to the National Youth Games in Asaba to represent the state effectively, following their excellent performance in the zonal eliminations for team sports.

Sir Wodi noted that Bayelsa has moved beyond mere participation in tournaments to striving for victories in every competition, stating that winning has become a culture in the state.

The Odi-born sports administrator praised Governor Douye Diri and his deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, for giving sports their maximum attention, highlighting that the sector has never had it so good.

He also expressed appreciation for the Commissioner for Sports Development, Dr. Daniel Igali, for effectively implementing the governor's vision.

Team Bayelsa qualified in both male and female categories for Basketball, Volleyball, Hockey, Football, and Beach Volleyball, while the male Handball and Rugby teams also advanced to the games in Asaba.
