Noah Lyles Wins 100m at US Olympic Trials, Secures Spot for Paris 2024

Posted : 24 June 2024

World champion Noah Lyles clinched victory in the 100m at the US Olympic trials, securing his spot for the upcoming Summer Games in Paris. Lyles, who previously missed the 100m event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics by finishing seventh in the trials, matched his personal best with a time of 9.83 seconds in Eugene, Oregon.

Joining Lyles on the US Olympic team are Kenny Bednarek, who finished second with a time of 9.87 seconds, and Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Fred Kerley, who secured third place in 9.88 seconds. Reflecting on his improvement since Tokyo, Lyles remarked, "Three years ago I got second to last. This year I came and won it. Part of the plan. Nothing changed. Might be a shock to everybody else, but when you know the goal, you know the goal."

Despite his achievements, Lyles has only one Olympic medal—a bronze in the 200m from Tokyo. He credited his past experiences for fueling his drive, saying, "If I didn't get that third place in Tokyo, I wouldn't have had that desire. I wouldn't have had that fire burning. I wouldn't have accomplished what I have accomplished in the past. Now we constantly look to the future with open eyes because anything can happen."

In other events, 2019 world champion Christian Coleman narrowly missed qualification by finishing fourth in the 100m, while Sam Kendricks set a meet record in the pole vault with a clearance of 5.92m. Additionally, 16-year-old Quincy Wilson broke his own under-18 world record in the 400m semi-final with a time of 44.59 seconds. The Paris Olympics are scheduled from July 26 to August 11, with the men's 100m final taking place on August 4.
