Noah Lyles advances to men’s 200m semis; Asher-Smith, Neita reach women’s final

Posted : 06 August 2024

Noah Lyles, fresh off his stunning victory in the men's 100m final, continued his impressive form by advancing to the semi-finals of the 200m at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Lyles showcased his dominance by winning his heat comfortably with a time of 20.19 seconds, surpassing defending champion Andre de Grasse of Canada, who finished second. This performance came less than 24 hours after his 100m triumph, underlining his extraordinary sprinting prowess.

In a heat featuring strong competitors, including Canada’s de Grasse, Lyles proved his superiority with ease. He even managed to glance behind him as he crossed the finish line, demonstrating his relaxed confidence. Japan’s Towa Uzawa took third place in the same heat, while Botswana's Letsile Tebogo also showed impressive form, potentially posing a challenge if both athletes meet in the final. The top three finishers in each heat advance to the semi-finals, and Lyles’ American teammate, Kenny Bednarek, led the pack with the fastest time of 19.96 seconds.

Team GB’s Zharnel Hughes faced disappointment as he was unable to compete in the 200m due to a hamstring injury, which prevented him from taking the start line.

In the women’s 200m, Team GB’s Dina Asher-Smith and Darryl Neita both secured spots in the final. Asher-Smith, who had missed out on the 100m final, bounced back with a strong performance. Despite being beaten by Gabby Thomas of the USA, who clocked 22.31 seconds, Asher-Smith remains a strong contender for the upcoming final.

Neita also qualified for the final, finishing second in her heat with a time of 22.24 seconds, just behind Brittany Brown from the USA. Neita is determined to add a third Olympic medal to her collection after narrowly missing out on bronze in the 100m event.

Julien Alfred of St Lucia, who made history with her 100m gold medal, is also aiming for a double sprint victory. She continued her impressive run by winning her heat and securing a place in the 200m final. Meanwhile, Britain’s Bianca Williams, despite running a season-best time of 22.58 seconds, finished fourth and did not advance.
