Nigeria's Onyekwere breaks 16-Year African Record, Amusan Shines At Florida Meet

Posted : 20 April 2023
With some amazing performances from some of the Nigerian superstars, the athletics season of 2023 is already looking promising.

Chioma Onyekwere put on an incredible display this past weekend at the Oklahoma Throws Series in Ramona, setting a huge personal record (PB) in the women's discus throw of 64.96 meters.

Along with winning the competition, Onyekwere's enormous throw also shattered the 16-year-old African record held by South African Elizna Naudé.

Although she already has a wildcard to Budapest due to her standing as the African champion, it is as satisfying to note that Onyekwere reached and exceeded the World Championship qualification requirement with her most recent achievement.

This season, Onyekwere's trajectory has been steadily higher; her first throw, two weeks ago, measured 55.88m, and last weekend, she improved to 60.79m.

Her new personal best beats her old record of 63.30m by more than 1.5 meters.

There is confidence that 2023 would be even better for the American-based athlete who won gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and at the 2022 African Championships in Mauritius, becoming the first Nigerian woman in history to accomplish so.

Over the weekend, Tobiloba Amusan participated in her first 100-meter hurdles race of 2023 at the Tom Jones Invitational in Florida.

Her time of 12.59 seconds earned her a second-place finish.

With a time of 12.53 seconds, Nia Ali very just took first place.

Devynne Charlton, who finished third in the final with a time of 12.64s, was beaten by Amusan, who won her heat in 12.74s.

Just a few hours later, Amusan returned to the track and clocked an astounding 11.10 seconds to create a new personal record in the women's 100m sprint.
