Nigeria's Brume announces exclusion from 2023 World Athletics Championship
Posted : 09 August 2023
Nigeria’s record holder in 100m, Godson Brume has announced that he would not take part in the World Athletics Championships holding in Budapest.
Nigeria's current fastest 100m runner, Brume's decision to pull out of the world title challenge in Budapest has put the country's chances of winning a medal at the 2023 World Championships in ruins.
Brume instead disclosed that he would be concentrating on his recovery ahead of the bigger picture, the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
“I want to thank everyone who supported me. This is a hard decision for me, but with much consideration, I’ve decided to focus on getting healthy for next year.
``With that being said I will not be competing at Budapest this August. Lastly, I will be coming back to the bayou next year,” he wrote.
The 20-year-old holds a record-setting time of 9.90s set by a Nigerian sprinter this season heading to Budapest, and his time is the eigth-fastest in the world.
He was also a silver medalist in the 100m in the NCAA Championships and had been unbeaten up until that point.
Brume was a key player in his school’s relay team, helping LSU set records and win the NCAA 4x100m title.
When he returned to Nigeria, he was unable to race in the Nigerian trials, but he was the anchor runner for the 4x100m relay team that qualified for the World Championships at the Warri Relays in Asaba.
Brume is an important athlete for Nigeria in the 100m and relays, and his absence in Budapest will be felt greatly.
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) will now have to focus on selecting the sprinters that’ll don the country’s colours in the men’s 100m and 4x100m, drafting National champion Usheoritse Itsekiri and second-placed finisher Seye Ogunlewe in the selection to Budapest.
