Nigerians unsettled as AIU delays Tobi Amusan's clearance

Posted : 29 July 2023
As the Budapest 2023 World Championships draw closer, Nigerians, particularly officials from the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), are deeply unsettled by the provisional suspension of Tobi Amusan, the reigning world 100m hurdles record holder.

The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) imposed the suspension due to three whereabouts failures.

Consequently, Amusan has dropped from third to 11th position in the world rankings, having been unable to compete since her last race in Hungary on July 18, where she ran 12.35 seconds.

An AFN official expressed concern over the potential setback for Nigeria's team if Amusan is unable to participate in the Budapest event.

However, the AIU has not yet scheduled a meeting to discuss her suspension, leaving uncertainty around her participation.

Despite AIU's efforts to reach out to its members from various countries regarding Amusan's issue, no meeting date has been set.

Another official advised the AFN to focus on World Championship preparations and not rely solely on Amusan's availability.

Meanwhile, long jumper Ese Brume, who is recovering from illness, has seen a decline in her world ranking from third to sixth.

Her performance this season has been inconsistent, and her mother, Adaka Sally, a former athlete, remains optimistic about her potential impact at the Budapest Championships. The World Championship is scheduled to take place from August 19 to 27.
