It was almost a complete harvest of victories for Nigerian players as the Lagos International Badminton Classic got into full swing at the Molade Okoya Thomas Hall in Teslim Balogun Stadium.
Virtually all of them advanced to the next round in the men’s singles, even though there were matches where Nigerians had to face each other.
Nigerian players were only defeated in a few instances. One such instance was the encounter between Moses Adeola Babatunde and India’s Aditya Gupta.
Playing on Court 4 in Match number 7, the Indian won the first set 21-7. Babatunde put up a spirited effort in the second set, but it was not enough as he lost 21-14, giving Gupta a 2-0 win.
In the Round of 32, another Indian proved to be a tough opponent. Vishal Vasudevan, ranked 133 in the world, defeated Nigeria’s Victor Ilechukwu, who is ranked 233.
Ilechukwu showed his strength in the first set, winning 21-15, but Vasudevan bounced back in the next two sets, winning 21-12 and 21-14.
The potential dominance of the Indians was countered by Nigeria’s top player, Anuoluwapo Opeyori, who defeated Rajesh Srikar 21-7, 18-14, and 22-20 in a thrilling Round of 32 match on Court 3.
Additionally, the world’s 96th-ranked Canadian player, Xiaodong Sheng, beat Nigeria’s Aliu Shehu, who is ranked 420. Sheng won in two straight sets, 21-9 and 21-8.
