On her part, Sarah Ovayioza Matthew, who competed in the 71kg category, claimed a bronze medal after snatching 110kg in her class, lifting 135kg in the clean and jerk, and then winning another bronze in the total with a 245kg lift. This earned Nigeria two medals at the global event, with 25 countries participating.

It is worth recalling that in the lead-up to the World Weightlifting Championship, Sarah won all three gold medals in her category at the 2024 Habu Gumel National Open Weightlifting Championship held in Abuja from December 1st to 3rd, setting two new national records in the process.

The President of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF), Ibrahim Abdul, has lauded the athletes for their exemplary performance in Bahrain and urged them to remain focused.

“We are proud of them, and we believe they will continue to improve on their performances. The World Championship is a global platform where athletes are exposed to opportunities to excel,” he said.

The 2024 World Weightlifting Championship, which began on December 6th, will conclude on December 15th.
