Samuel Onikeku, the Technical Director of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), said the federation is confident of winning multiple gold medals at the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

In an exclusive interview, Onikeku expressed optimism that the athletes will bring home gold medals for the country.

“Our athletes are in a good frame of mind, and with their recent performances at the African Games and World Championships, we have the confidence that our team will perform well and is determined to win medals.

“We aim to hear our national anthem played at the Paris Olympics stadium, and we are working hard to make this a reality,” he said.

The Technical Director mentioned that 36 athletes are already on their way to the Olympics.

“We have qualified for four relays and 14 individual events, and there are about 8 athletes who will secure spots based on rankings.

“Between 36 to 40 athletes or more will represent Nigeria in athletics at the Olympics.

“My goal is for the athletes to achieve personal bests so that we can win medals.

“We have been working towards this for four years, and we believe it will come to fruition,” he added.

Nigeria will participate in 11 sports at the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics Games.

The president of the federation stated that their target is to stand on the podium and hear the national anthem of Nigeria being played.

He congratulated the Nigerian team for their outstanding performance at the recently concluded championship in Ghana.

Team Nigeria emerged champions at the 2024 Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Zone II Senior Athletics Championships held in Accra, Ghana.

Team Nigeria secured 13 gold medals, four silver, and one bronze to claim the top spot at the championships.

The Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Region II Senior Athletics Championship took place from June 3 to June 6 in Accra, Ghana.

According to him, the athletes are determined to make the country proud in their respective competitions.

He mentioned that the competition also serves as preparation ahead of the Olympic Games.

A total of 88 athletes have qualified for the Olympics, with many others still in the qualification process.
