The Nigerian Military, the organizers of the maiden African Military Olympics, remains committed to the event despite the death of the Chief of Army Staff and chief organizer of the competition, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja.
Recall that the COAS, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, was pronounced dead just a few days before the commencement of the African Military Olympics.

The military, in a statement, confirmed that the death of its COAS would not affect the date or schedule of the competition.
"We join all African sportsmen and women in expressing deep condolences to the family, friends, and the military establishment on the recent death of the Chief of Army Staff of Nigeria, Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja. May his soul journey back peacefully to his Creator."
Significantly, there are only eight days left until the start of the 2nd African Military Games, which will be held in Abuja from November 18 to 30, 2024.
With over 2,000 athletes in 19 sports from 44 countries, Abuja will be abuzz with a festival of festivities and sports.
This is particularly important as Nigeria begins a new chapter in national sports administration with the rebirth of the National Sports Commission, whose board will likely include a representative from the military.
