Neita and Asher-Smith win British 200m at rainy Diamond League event

Posted : 03 July 2023
Daryll Neita emerged victorious in the women's 200m at a rainy Diamond League event in Stockholm, with fellow Briton Dina Asher-Smith following closely behind to secure a British one-two finish.

Neita, who had previously taken second place in the 100m in Lausanne, clocked a winning time of 22.50 seconds, while Asher-Smith recorded a time of 22.58 seconds.

In the men's 400m hurdles, Olympic champion and world record holder Karsten Warholm comfortably claimed victory with a time of 47.57 seconds. However, the end of his race was disrupted by protesters who entered the track near the finish line.

Three individuals knelt on the ground and held up a banner across six lanes, causing other athletes to run through it as they completed the race. Warholm expressed his disapproval of the protest, considering it disrespectful to those focused on performing well.

Despite the wet conditions affecting the track and hampering the potential for fast times, British sprinter Reece Prescod managed to secure second place in the men's 100m with a time of 10.14 seconds, trailing behind South Africa's Akani Simbine.

Laura Muir finished sixth in the women's 1500m, while Melissa Courtney-Bryant finished one place ahead of her. In the men's 400m, Matt Hudson-Smith, a world bronze medallist, took third place with a time of 45.57 seconds. Jazmin Sawyers placed eighth in the women's long jump, achieving a best jump of 6.25m.

The men's pole vault competition was delayed due to inclement weather in Stockholm but was eventually won by local favorite Armand Duplantis.
