India’s javelin star Neeraj Chopra is set to join a training group under the guidance of Czech legend Jan Zelezny this winter, as announced by the Czech Athletics Federation (CAS) on Friday. Chopra, the 2021 Olympic champion and 2023 World Championship silver medalist, had approached Zelezny several weeks ago, seeking his expertise in coaching.
Zelezny, a triple Olympic gold medalist from 1992, 1996, and 2000, expressed his excitement about working with Chopra, having recognized his potential early in his career. The 58-year-old coach emphasized that he would only be working with Chopra for the next two years, beginning with their in-person collaboration at a winter camp in South Africa.
However, Chopra's decision to join Zelezny’s group has led to some discord within the Czech team. Jakub Vadlejch, the Tokyo silver medalist, has decided to leave the training group after nearly 14 years, following the news of Chopra's inclusion.
