Abdi Nageeye from the Netherlands and Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya emerged victorious in the men's and women's races at the New York City Marathon, respectively. Nageeye displayed remarkable strength in the final stretch, overtaking 2022 champion Evans Chebet to finish with a time of 2:07.39.
Kenyan runner Albert Korir secured third place. Expressing his feelings after the race, Nageeye, a silver medalist at the 2020 Olympics, remarked on the surreal experience of crossing the finish line.
In the men’s wheelchair race, American favorite Daniel Romanchuk claimed victory for the third time, completing the race in 1:36:31.
British athlete David Weir finished just five seconds behind, earning a commendable second place, while Japan's Tomoko Suzuki took third, finishing eight seconds later. Marcel Hug from Switzerland, who was looking for a fourth consecutive New York victory, finished in fourth place after dominating 16 straight marathons.
On the women's side of the wheelchair race, Susannah Scaroni triumphed for the second time, finishing over ten minutes ahead of fellow American Tatyana McFadden, a five-time champion. Switzerland's Manuela Schar rounded out the podium in third place.
In the women’s marathon, Chepkirui's time of 2:24.35 not only earned her victory but also marked her first win in a world marathon major, finishing 14 seconds ahead of 2023 champion Hellen Obiri. Chepkirui expressed her joy, stating, "This means a lot to me. I had to really dig in and it was really hard."
