The four-time Olympic champion placed eighth in his farewell London Marathon and said that he would run in the Great Manchester 10k in May.
"Part of me was wanting to cry," the 40-year-old Briton told reporters after crossing the finish line. "I will miss that feeling, I am emotional today.
"I want to pass that on. The Great North Run is going to be my last ever run and that will be my goodbye."
"My career has been amazing, my wife and kids have been with me throughout this journey and I want to give time to them now, as well as getting involved in grassroots sport and give back to this sport," Farah added.
Farah had his best performance at the London Olympics in 2012 when he won the 5,000- and 10,000-meter races. He replicated the feat at the Rio Olympics in 2016.
The half-marathon competition on September 10 will be a fitting farewell for Britain's most accomplished long-distance runner because he has won the Great North Run six times.
