The Minister of Sports, John Enoh, has declared that the age limit for the National Youth Games be reverted to U-17 for subsequent Games.
The Minister made this declaration while opening the eighth National Youth Games in Asaba today.
Enoh noted that reverting the age limit to U-17 will allow for greater participation from different age groups in the effort to develop athletes who can replace the aging ones at international competitions.
It is recalled that the National Youth Games was initially set with a U-17 age limit.
Speaking further, the Minister said the National Youth Games was conceived to serve as a tool to promote grassroots sports development and foster education and culture among the youth.
He disclosed that over six thousand athletes from all states and the Federal Capital Territory will compete in 36 sports.
He explained that the Games provide a unique opportunity to identify young sports talents who can be nurtured to become the next generation of world-class athletes.
He commended the Delta State government for its excellent hosting of sports activities at both national and international levels.
In his address, Governor Rt. Honourable Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State noted that the Games have produced notable athletes who have represented Nigeria at international competitions.
He said Delta State has been providing ample support for sports to thrive in the country.
