Max Whitlock aims to make history with fourth consecutive Olympic Medal in Paris
Posted : 29 September 2023
Max Whitlock is setting his sights on "making history" at the 2024 Paris Olympics after a much-needed break that left him feeling somewhat aimless. The three-time Olympic pommel horse champion initially contemplated leaving gymnastics behind after Tokyo 2020 but is now gearing up for his return at the World Championships this Saturday.
Whitlock's aspiration is to become the first gymnast to secure a medal on the same apparatus in four consecutive Olympic Games, a feat he hopes to achieve in Paris. For the 30-year-old British athlete, the pursuit of "making history" provides him with a renewed sense of purpose.
While Whitlock has always focused on his performance and routine, with medal aspirations secondary, he now acknowledges that retaining titles has become a significant motivation for him. His impressive Olympic record includes two gold medals in Tokyo 2021, adding to the gold and bronze he earned at the 2016 Rio Games and two bronzes from London 2012.
Winning a fourth Olympic medal on the pommel horse in Paris would not only be an incredible personal achievement but also a historic milestone in gymnastics. Whitlock is driven by both a profound sense of accomplishment and a strong desire to continue competing at the highest level.
Whitlock's journey back into competitive gymnastics begins with the men's team and individual apparatus qualification at the upcoming World Championships on Saturday.
