Marton sets stage for Hungary’s dominancy, Ukraine and Slovenia follow

Posted : 21 June 2023
On the opening evening of the Silesia 2023 European Athletics Team Championships, Hungary's young and ambitious team took the lead with 20.5 points. They accumulated a total of 159 points after securing three wins in the first 12 events of the three-day competition.

Ukraine followed closely behind with 138.5 points, aiming to reclaim their position in the top tier, while Slovenia held the third promotion spot with 122 points. Hungary's strong performance was fueled by their anticipation for the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

Anita Marton, Hungary's twice European indoor champion in shot put, delivered an impressive performance.

Despite a slow start, she took the lead in the fourth round with a throw of 17.66m, eventually improving to 17.74m.

Marton expressed her happiness at participating in her 23rd season of athletics and believed Hungary had a great chance of winning the division.

Hungary continued their success in the men's 400m, where 21-year-old Attila Molnar secured first place with a time of 45.30 seconds, just 0.01 ahead of Ukraine's Oleksandr Pohorilko. This result boded well for the upcoming European Athletics U23 Championships.

Daniel Huller, another promising 22-year-old Hungarian athlete, narrowly missed victory in the men's 800m, losing by a mere 0.005 seconds. Croatia's Marino Bloudek claimed the win with both athletes recording a time of 1:47.11. Despite the close finish, Bloudek expressed uncertainty about his victory.

Istvan Palkovits secured Hungary's third victory in the men's 3000m steeplechase, finishing almost four seconds ahead of his closest competitor with a time of 8:43.82. Hungary's young and hungry team demonstrated their potential and team spirit, considering each member crucial in the overall standings of the competition.
