Mark Cavendish's pursuit of a record 35th Tour de France stage win came to an end as he crashed with 61km remaining on Stage 8. Mads Pedersen of Lidl-Trek emerged as the stage winner in a thrilling sprint, defeating Jasper Philipsen of Alpecin–Deceuninck. Wout van Aert of Jumbo-Visma was left disappointed after being boxed in by his own leadout rider.
Pedersen showcased a powerful sprint to secure the victory, with Philipsen closely behind. The stage began with a breakaway attempt by three riders, but they were eventually reeled in by the peloton. As tension and fatigue set in, a moment of loss of concentration caused a crash that ended Cavendish's race.
The pace increased as the finish line approached, with Jumbo-Visma setting a fast tempo on the final climb. A late attack by Victor Campenaerts of Lotto-Dstny briefly split the bunch before the favorites regrouped. Lidl-Trek took control in the final kilometers, with Alex Kirsch leading the peloton.
In the uphill sprint, Pedersen unleashed a powerful surge down the right side of the road, holding off the challenge from Philipsen and securing the win.
Pedersen praised Cavendish and expressed sadness at the way the legend's Tour de France journey concluded. Van Aert faced difficulties due to being boxed in but managed to secure third place.
Despite the disappointment for Cavendish, the race continued with heightened energy and excitement.
