Marathon Swimmers Tackle the Seine as Noah Lyles Pursues 200m Gold Amid Paris Olympic Thrills

Posted : 08 August 2024

Olympic marathon swimmers plunged into the Seine on Thursday as the river was finally deemed clean enough for competition, while U.S. sprinter Noah Lyles aimed to add a 200m gold to his 100m victory. As the Paris Games reached its climax, basketball legend LeBron James led a U.S. dream team against Serbia, powered by NBA MVP Nikola Jokic, in a highly anticipated semifinal.

The marathon swim, which saw 24 women race 10 kilometers through Paris, had faced delays due to concerns over water quality despite a significant investment to improve the Seine’s condition. Dutch swimmer Sharon van Rouwendaal emerged victorious, dedicating her win to her late pet dog, Rio, after battling strong currents and fierce competition to finish in 2 hours 3 minutes 34 seconds. The water quality issue has been a recurring theme at the Games, with some events postponed or canceled due to pollution concerns.

On the track, Lyles entered the 200m final with his signature confidence, despite not winning his semifinal heat. The American sprinter, who has focused intensely on the 200m, declared it the event where he can showcase his true speed and endurance. Facing competition from teammates Kenny Bednarek, Erriyon Knighton, and Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, who outpaced him in the semifinal, Lyles remains determined to prove his dominance.

Meanwhile, in a thrilling 400m hurdles final, reigning champion Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone was set to clash with Dutch rival Femke Bol, the two fastest women in the event's history. Bol, who already secured a gold in the 4x400 mixed relay, acknowledged McLaughlin-Levrone as the favorite but promised to give her best effort. The packed athletics schedule also featured Grant Holloway of the U.S., who sought redemption in the 110m hurdles after narrowly missing gold in Tokyo. As the Games reached their peak, excitement continued to build across multiple disciplines.
